While providing industry-relevant training for South Africans living in one of the country’s poorest provinces, Niagara College partnered with other agencies to combat the disproportionate number of women affected by HIV/AIDS in the region.
Women experience nearly 60 percent of all HIV infection cases, partly due to the unequal balance of power between men and women in South African communities.
The Other Half project focused on men’s roles in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Men attended weekly discussion sessions, youth participated in outreach programs, and a local wellness centre responded to the distinct needs of women through the program.
